How to dress Rosario Dawson

Let’s get this out of the way: Rosario Dawson has a crazy hot bod. Like, ridiculously hot. Like, if she’d been born 2,000 years ago, today’s archaeologists would be digging up fertility fetishes that look like Rosario Dawson. That’s just basic science right there.

But dressing that hot bod? That shit takes time. More time than you may think.

Observe the above photo. It was taken at the New York premiere of Trance, Dawson’s new movie. The frock is a Bottega Veneta, and it’s pre-fall, if you must know. And you must.

But here’s the more interesting part: This dress was chosen weeks ago during a marathon fitting that determined exactly what Dawson would wear to each and every Trace promotional event, in a whirlwind that involved her traveling to Los Angeles, New York, London and then back to Los Angeles.

And we’re not just talking about red-carpet looks. We’re talking daytime photo calls, late-night talk show appearances--dozens of pieces of clothing.

During a recent interview, Dawson described the process to me this way:

An hour goes by and you’ve only tried on four or five dresses. They had like 25 dresses, and just going through them, that took 2 hours...Sometimes you’re trying to figure out how to put them on. You’re thinking, “This is really beautiful, but is this the front or the back?”

It’s amazing and fun, but it’s also dependent on what the designers have made. It’s almost the same thing as looking for a job. ... I was kind of cursing the guys, my male co-stars. I am spending literally hours and hours trying on stuff, and they are probably like, “I’ll take the gray suit and a polka dot tie.”

The takeaway: In Hollywood, nothing happens by chance. Not even in the Oscar off-season.

P.S. You’d think that Dawson would be allowed to keep the shoes that the studio puts her in for that Trance promotional tour. But nope. Even the used shoes have to go back at the end of the tour, she told me. Jimmy Choo, we hardly knew ye.
